The Challenge

At the start of the year, the Electrical Safety Council contacted AVT to produce a 15 minute video to help promote electrical safety awareness in the home and garden. In addition we were asked to provide exhibition stand design and build and to produce an ‘Interactive Game’ for use at the exhibitions throughout the UK.

The Electrical Safety Council is an independent charity committed to reducing deaths and injuries through electrical accidents at home and at work. They are supported by all sectors of the electrical industry as well as local and central government and work to promote safety and good practice.

The video needed to convey the importance of electrical safety in the home and garden and how easy and common it is to be electrically unsafe everyday. This multi-platform project was of vital importance to the Electrical Safety Council in continuing to develop their external communications, and also to re-inforce their brand and message by reaching as many consumers as possible.

The Video

The AVT Solution

AVT came up with a concept based around the “Watts”, a working class, mixed race family with a busy, modern dynamic. The video follows family members around their morning routines and interlinks together as the day unfolds and they interact with each other. Through watching the video, the viewer is taken on a journey that shows the dangerous consequences of not following safe electrical practices.

The stories pause and rewind at appropriate points and a voice over highlights the hazards within each story. Scenarios are all about the home / garden and focus on the every day things people use. Research was key to this project and our team viewed a number of safety genre videos and held numerous brainstorming sessions. A clear, easy to follow narrative and story was essential to underpin the electrical safety messages.

The scenarios from the video are related to the interactive game, where the user will take a test – this information was of great significance to the Electrical Safety Council as they wanted to measure people’s electrical safety knowledge. AVT created a back-end database solution which enabled the results from people playing the ‘interactive game’ at the exhibitions to be analysed.

The text and graphics used on the video were clean and non-fussy, whilst being clear and easily legible. Household / garden background noise is played during the game scenarios to add atmosphere. Subtle sound effects will be used on buttons and on interactive areas to give positive user feedback and help players use the game.

The correct use of lighting and composition gave the game scenarios a very polished look and subtle image framing movements that follow the mouse resulted in a very fluid feel and conveyed to the player that they’re in control of what they see and where they choose to look. This high level of user interactivity will keep players interested and make the game’s challenge more engaging.

The Results

The final delivery of the video was put on DVD, and the completed project has been shown at a number of road shows and exhibitions throughout the UK. This will also shortly be made available free of charge on the Electrical Safety Council’s website. At each exhibition the DVD played on a loop at the Electrical Safety Council stand and attracted a very high number of visits to the stand compared to previous exhibitions.

Feedback from visitors and other departments was extremely positive about the new exhibition stands, the Home & Garden Safety DVD and interactive game.

This whole project was turned around in a very short lead time and the Electrical Safety Council’s Events Manager was full of praise. We look forward to continuing our relationship and further event, video and multimedia production in the coming months.
