ELC Talks the Language of the Web

The Challenge

The English Language Centre (ELC) in Brighton is one of the city’s best established and most successful schools for learning English as a foreign language.  It attracts students from all over the world wanting to attend one or more of its courses and programmes.

ELC Chief Executive, Charles Harrison was aware that the School’s online capability should be a cornerstone of its marketing and PR effort, providing a hub for inbound and outbound communications and a showcase for the school, the programmes, the staff and the city.  With his existing site not up to the job, he felt he needed some initial consultancy and then practical support to move his web presence up an entire gear.

The AVT Solution

The AVT consultancy team was able to offer some straightforward but effective advice to improve the site structure, navigation, functionality and feel.

“It was clear to us that we needed to make the site simple and accessible, but at the same time meet the challenge of selecting, booking and paying for courses as painlessly as possible.  Our solution was to create a sophisticated online wizard which makes these functions user friendly and efficient for the school as well,”

said AVT Multimedia Head, Jon Fox.

The Results

From a mix of styles and information formats, the ELC website (www.elc-brighton.co.uk) now looks and operates more effectively.  It provides a 24/7 global shop window for the school and a much more interactive and functional means of talking to potential and former students, and vice versa.

“The AVT team did a great job on the site.  From giving us the initial strategic consultancy and advice, they then implemented the tactical roll-out, including a redesign, and have made a massive difference to the school’s online presence.  The new mix of content, navigation, functionality and interactivity is already making a positive difference in our marketing.  And the online course booking wizard has made a real difference to the amount of time and effort the school administration team have to spend processing applications and payment,”

said Charles Harrison.

AVT sees further possibilities for the school site, including the introduction of new media techniques, such as streaming.

“We have loads more we can do to increase the interaction of the school with its audiences and we look forward to the opportunity to stay involved”,

says AVT Chairman Pete Orpen, who headed up the consultancy team.
