SEEDA tourism DVD finds the perfect spot
The Challenge
The South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA) invited AVT to submit a proposal for a DVD to help promote the South East as a premier location for tourism opportunities. The DVD would be shown at a number of events attended by differing audiences, with the aim of conveying the rural beauty and the endless activities offered in the South East, as well as the historical attributes of the region.

The AVT Solution
The format of the DVD alternated moving images with stills provided by the National Trust and various other organisations that were to be featured in the programme. SEEDA required a rapid turnaround delivery date, with little margin for error. Ben Fogle was chosen to present the piece, locations chosen and a script produced all within a matter of hours.
Featured locations were chosen by proximity and journey time. Our production crew had four full days of filming ahead of them. Locations were streamlined down and we began shooting with a day at the Watercress Steam Line in Alresford, Hampshire.
The second day brought our team to the site of the first National Trust building at Alfriston Clergy House. Various shots of chalk figures along the Downs were taken including the Long Man, as well as the sweeping Cuckmere River and its surrounding working landscape.
Ben Fogle joined us for our third day of filming, where we began with his opening sequence at Rudyard Kipling’s family home, Bateman’s. From there we moved over to the town of Steyning in order to capture Ben’s closing sequence amongst the Wealden tile-hung houses. Finally, we finished this long day back at the AVT Sound Studios in order for Ben to record his voiceover.
For the final day of shooting, the crew settled in at The Tolsey – Burford’s Farmer’s Market in Oxfordshire. A variety of local produce, homebaked sweets, plants and flowers were abundant and brought in both the locals and people from afar. The Tolsey is a historical building, housing a collection that recalls Burford’s past - it is actually where traders paid their tolls. This is just one example of where the South East is steeped in history.
Immediately following the four days of filming, AVT began to piece together the stills with the moving images, in order for all regions of the South East to be covered.
Following a 3D animated map created by AVT graphics, the visuals followed the script to hone in on three distinct areas of the South East – the South Downs, the Surrey Hills and the Chilterns/Ridgeway. With Ben’s voiceover atop the stunning images of the South East, there was only one more device to apply: music to accompany the glorious imagery of the South East. At SEEDA’s request, AVT acquired the music of various famous composers who lived in the South East of England, including the works of Vaughan Williams and Frederick Delius.
The Results
The DVD “Exploring the Hidden South East” was played in an exhibition the following weekend after the final edit was completed. The various music licensing and clearance required for the DVD initially allowed SEEDA 10 copies. With the success of the programme at this first exhibit and the permission from the various music publishers, “Exploring the Hidden South East” has been given an extension on copies to be made and years to be played.
