AVT helps Hamlet Trust wave the flag for mental health

The Challenge

The Hamlet Trust is a small UK based NGO which was set up to support survivors of the psychiatric system in central and eastern Europe develop advocacy skills, human & civil rights and capacity building across the region.   Many former mental patients in the countries dominated by Communism until the early nineties are still living at the margins of society, victims of widespread social exclusion, failing institutions and lack of resources.

To raise awareness of these issues and to support fundraising efforts, Hamlet Trust held an event in central London to celebrate 15 years of consistent activism and effort by the Trust to effect change.  The Trust invited George Soros, founder of the Open Society Institute (OSI), and one of the world’s great philanthropists, to speak as a guest of honour.   Much of Hamlet’s work to support user groups in the region has been made possible through grants from OSI over a decade.

The AVT Solution

The event, including speeches by Hamlet Trust Founder and President Dr Peter Barham and George Soros himself was filmed and recorded by an AVT crew.  A 20 minute edited version of the presentation was subsequently synched with a PowerPoint™ presentation, encoded as streaming media & packaged as an open access webcast from the Hamlet Trust website at: www.hamlet-trust.org.uk

The Results

The webcast has been frequently viewed by user groups across the region and by existing and former donors to the Trust.  It has also provided a compelling showcase for potential funders who want to find out more about the contribution Hamlet Trust is making to the social inclusion of adults with long term mental health issues.

“The webcast has been very helpful in giving people a snapshot of what the Trust has achieved and what our future objectives are.  It has provided a significant new dimension to our communications,”

said Dr Barham.

In 2005 the Hamlet Trust entered into a partnership with the Mental Health Foundation (MHF), a major NGO working in the areas of research, developing services, training, influencing policy and raising public awareness within the UK.
