The Challenge

With its unique coastline and strong maritime heritage, Cornwall confers natural advantages to its marine businesses, and Cornwall Marine Network is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to turning these into growth and prosperity.

Cornwall Marine Network, the British Marine Federation and Pendennis Shipyard organised the ‘Super Yacht UK Tour of Excellence’ Conference Dinner, which was hosted in the Killigrew Room at the historic and atmospheric Pendennis Castle in Falmouth.  They wanted to create the right atmosphere and provide something special for their 100 international superyacht delegates, made up of captains, project managers, brokers and designers.

AVT’s brief was to light two beautifully built yachts (one 20’ and one 30’) that would be placed either side of the main entrance to the Barrack block at Pendennis Castle.  The dinner was to be held in the Killigrew Room and the idea was that the guests would walk between the two yachts to enter the building for their dinner.

We were also asked to provide a laptop and install 42” plasma screens on behalf of Pendennis Shipyard, showing a looped presentation of the shipyard.   The British Marine Federation also asked us to supply a sound system for the background music in the dining room.

The AVT Solution

After technical analysis AVT decided to run single phase 63amp cable from the Pendennis Castle mains supply around one side of the building into a mains distribution box where a number of 16 amp supplies would be run out and split to each light on both boats.

AVT’s Brian Aston commented “All of the equipment had to be IP (Ingression protection) rated to make it safe to use outside in wet weather.  That was just as well because it poured down most of the evening!  The lights we used consisted of 4 x 400 watt discharge floods, 5 x 150 watt MBI blue lights and 2 x 150 watt MBI white lights.   These helped create a wonderful ambience and showed off the yachts in all their splendour.”

Our team had to set the lights up before it got dark and then tweak them shortly before the guests arrived for effect, when it had become darker.   All the lighting was dismantled and collected at midnight as the venue required the site to be cleared.

The Results

“AVT specified exactly what we needed to impress our international delegates who were part of a ‘Superyacht Tour of Excellence’ conference.

On the day, AVT delivered the lighting and were flexible with what we needed and efficient in the way they conducted the installation, being especially mindful of safety as well as presentation.  I would recommend AVT to other businesses in Cornwall”
