Cathedral & Church United for Cornwall Lieutenancy

The Challenge

AVT’s South West Office were asked by Cornwall Lieutenancy to provide a video and audio link between Truro Cathedral and St Mary’s Methodist Church (also in Truro).  This was for the VE / VJ day 60th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony on Sept 11th 2005.  The link was felt necessary due to the large number of people expected (correctly!) to attend.

The distance between the two buildings is about 80 metres but public footpaths and a road made a ‘hard wire’ link impractical.  There were also a number of trees along the route - this ruled out an analogue microwave link as the trees and physical access needed to gain line of sight would prove too time consuming and dangerous.

‘Microwave’ involves the use of specialist equipment that through the use of compression provides an ultra high frequency carrier wave (2.5 Ghz) to carry video and audio signals.  These signals are then decoded at the receiver end.  Use of these frequencies are strictly controlled and you have to purchase a short term license to use them.

The AVT Solution

Jon Johnson, AVT’s South West Regional Manager decided that the best option would be to use a digital microwave link.  This type has the capacity to ‘bounce’ or reflect the signal off surrounding buildings to the receiver.  Microwave signals are greatly reduced by water, i.e. rain which collected in the trees between the two venues, and it was raining for the two days before the event……

Thorough checks were carried out to make sure the signal was strong enough and both the video and audio signals were excellent.  Two weeks later we reproduced the event but in reverse (transmitting from the Methodist Church to the Cathedral) for the video and audio relay of Brother Yun, a monk from China.

The Results

Jon Johnson, AVT’s South West Regional Manager said

“I am delighted that AVT have helped in some small way to link the Methodist Church and the Church of England in a very practical way! Both jobs were very successful and everyone involved was delighted with the results”.
